God wants us to have possessions. This is obvious with the 8th and 10th commandments. The key is how to deal with possessions. Respect for another’s possessions is vital to being a follower of God. Having possessions can blind some peoples’ senses and warp perspective. Take the time to ponder this: When we were born, did we choose our family and wealth? That was out of our control. And again, when we die, can we bring our possessions with us? This leads me to conclude that all comes from and belongs to God. Therefore, we are called to be wise stewards of all of His stuff. Use it wisely to serve others, make an impact on the world and inspire others to be followers of Jesus Christ. David dedicated a lot of time to accumulate wealth to build the great temple of Jerusalem. In 1 Chronicles 29 we read of the gold, silver, bronze, and precious stones he brought in abundance to the Lord. In verse 14 David declares, “but who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to make this freewill offering? For all things come from you, and of your own have we given you.” David gave to God what was really God’s in the first place. On top of that, all of David’s work was just a preparation for building the temple. He never saw the building of the temple; that was for his son Solomon. So David worked hard to accumulate and left a legacy. David accumulated for God because he knew all the gold and silver and precious stone was God’s. What are we doing with our possessions today? Are we giving glory to God?
