Your Tongue Guides the Way

Written by Joe Dardano

What path are you on today? I ask this in light of Deuteronomy 30: 15. God states, “I have set before you today life and prosperity, death and adversity.” There is no middle ground. Either you are moving toward life and abundant goodness or misery that leads to death. The upward path involves following the ways of God. The downward journey is caused by a heart that is dull, turning away from God and worshipping other Gods. In verses Deut 30:19-20, God urges us to “Choose life so that [we and our] descendants may live, loving the Lord your God, obeying Him, and holding fast to Him; for that means life to you and length of days…” These verses are encouraging and inspirational. They push us to seek the face of God and His ways in all we do. As a practising but imperfect Christian, I always search for practical ways to implement the faith moment by moment. I value simple, useful tools to help my walk with Jesus Christ. In relation to these verses in Deuteronomy, I found Proverbs 18: 21 as a fantastic guide to help me choose life over death. Its the power of the tongue. Through our words, we can walk the path of life or death, the choice is ours: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue and those who love it will eat its fruits.” This is useful to me. Proverbs 18:21 helps me put into action the teachings of Deuteronomy 30:15-20. The power is in our mouths, to edify or bring down ourselves and others. What will you say to others today?
