If You Dont Work…

Written by Joe Dardano

The Bible makes clear in 2 Thessalonians 3:10, “For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.” The law reflects the value that human beings, through logic and common sense, should not expect something for nothing. The members of the Kingdom of God are part of one human family, each with dignity and value. That being said, each can contribute to the welfare of the community and none, if capable, should expect others to offer handouts when they are capable of giving something to God’s family. The message in Proverbs 12:11 is similar: “Those who work their land will have abundant food, but those who chase fantasies have no sense.” People who constantly demand rights from governments when they are not contributing to the welfare of the community are taking from society and should be taught to contribute something of value, so that society flourishes and moves forward for the benefit of all. In addition, the work we do is service to others, and we need to leave results up to God. When a seed is planted, it is done in faith that rain and earth will sprout food for consumption; the result of our labor is the food which God produces, not us; nevertheless we still need to plan the seeds to allow God to provide:  “Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God. But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless and is in danger of being cursed. In the end it will be burned” (Hebrews 6:7-8) You see, that land that sprung up thorns and thistles was not cultivated and worked on. To eat, we need to work.
