Sometimes bad things will not even happen to us and Satan will still work to decieve us into sinning. Satan will fight tooth and nail to get us to turn our backs on God. We know from Scripture that forgiveness is an important currency in the Kingdom of God (Luke 17:4). If someone or a group of people hurt us, we are taught to forgive. However, resentment toward others can also sneak up on us and this manifests in the form of evil committed against people we love. In this way Satan works through indirect means to get our passions lit up to hate those who harm our friends and loved ones. However, there is a remedy for this, “Whomever you forgive anything, so do I. For indeed what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, has been for you in the presence of Christ, so that we might not be taken advantage of by Satan, for we are not unaware of his purposes” (2 Cor 2:10-11). So when our friends forgive those who harm them, we should do the same. In this way, we prevent Satan from tricking our minds into hate. Our flesh invariably wants to react and fight evil with evil. We must renew our minds daily to help the light overcome darkness within us. Finally, I would go one step further and recommend you forgive those who harm your family and friends even if your family or friends do not forgive themselves.
