Desire is from God

Written by Joe Dardano

If you grew up in a shame-based faith, you were probably taught that all desire is bad. That is not so. Yes, Satan can deceive, which is why we need to test all our longings against the criteria of faith in Christ and Sacred Scripture. Holy desire, though, comes from God. God speaks to us through our hearts, hearts that long for Him. All the things that are true and beautiful originate from God, and those things reside in our hearts. The things we desire, in most certain ways, are not present within us until God prepares these desires and implants them inside us in His time and place. As humans, we are prepared by God as we move through life. His longings enter our hearts on His timetable, not ours. When I was a boy, I did not have a strong desire to earn money and multiply investments. As a man, with a wife and children, employees and responsibilities, God has planted that desire in my heart so that I can provide for others–and accomplish His will. This has happened in his time, in the midst of my current life circumstances. Recall Ephesians 2:10 “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” God prepares our lives ahead of time. If we choose to walk in His path for us, we will find happiness, peace and joy. When it comes to desire, it has to be ready within you, prepared by God for it to be real and have power to inspire us to act in accordance with that desire. Look at the Song of Solomon 3:5, “I adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem, by the gazelles or the wild does: do not stir up or awaken love until it is ready!” True love; true desire is created by God and given to us freely.
