Considering the cultural battles we find in western media today between left and right, we can easily forget that we have a loving God who wants all people to come to him. That invitation is an open invitation but it is also contingent. True, God loves us unconditionally. He will not turn anyone away if that person truly wants to turn their heart to Jesus Christ. In fact that open invitation garnered criticism as Jesus was scolded for welcoming and eating with sinners. (Luke 15:2) Yet there is a provision to that invitation from God to love and welcome all people, regardless of what they have done; regardless of race, color of skin or faith tradition. That provision is repentance. (Luke 15:7) It is not simply that God loves all people and invites all to come to Him and that all are welcome; that is all true. However, God welcomes us and forgives us and desires we follow Him, which requires giving up our old ways and submitting to His teachings and lifestyle. Christianity is not a country club; it is a way of living. Jesus says “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6) This teaching is crystal clear, coming not from me but directly from Sacred Scripture.
