No. Money is not evil. In the Bible, it is how we use money, with good or evil motives that matters. Money is not evil, but greed is: “Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions” (Luke 12:15). It is not stuff or currency that corrupts but our mindset toward it. Greed corrupts the soul, destroys relationships and is contrary to God’s laws. Love of money is another evil, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs” (1 Tim 6:10). You see some people cannot handle money, like those who cannot handle alcohol. When I served the poorest of the poor in the inner city, I helped many recovering alcoholics. What I learned from them is that they cannot consume alcohol, period. If they did, they would descend into a slippery slope of a living hell. The same goes for money. If one cannot control and use money wisely, the person could be consumed by it. Dishonesty is another evil, “Dishonest money dwindles away,but whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow” (Proverbs 13:11) You see in this verse, accumulation of money is good. The Scripture puts a value on growing money. The real issue is how we approach money. Greed, love of materialism and dishonesty will drive money away from us but more importantly drive God farther away. And if that is the case, do we really advance if we gain the world but lose our souls? It is certainly better to advance in wealth God’s way.
