Words are power and thus very important. We experience the consequences of what we declare through our mouths. The book of Ecclestiates teaches us this lesson very clearly in Chapter 10:12, “Words from the mouth of the wise are gracious, but fools are consumed by their own lips.” The wise are wise because they know what they say has impact. They know that words are power. So wise people choose their words carefully and speak good things to other people. Fools do not have this knowledge. Fools spout off the first things that enter their minds, every nonsensical thing they can think of, and so experience the negative consequences of their words. Later in chapter 10, God warns us to keep strict vigilance over our words. “Do not revile the king even in your thoughts, or curse the rich in your bedroom, because a bird in the sky may carry your words, and a bird on the wing may report what you say” (Ecc.10:20). This admonition is for all those complainers and whiners who tend to blame everyone and everything. If we are disposed to complain about wealthy people and about government, prosperity will never come to us. In fact, our words of derision against others will come back to bite us. The Bible describes it as a “bird on wing may report what you say.” What we put out into the world, comes back to us every time. Remember Galations 6:7-8, “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.”
