Hundreds of times I have read or heard that God speaks only in silence. Countless times a minister, evangelist or teacher has quoted Psalm 46:10: “Be still and know that I am God.” My mind has been trained to understand that I must be still, silent and listen carefully for that quiet small voice guiding my path in life. In all fairness, this has been true in my life. God has, in fact, spoke to me in the stillness of life, in the quietness of my being. The story of Martha and Mary, when Jesus visited their home in Bethany certainly confirms this spiritual truth when Jesus confirmed that Mary’s choice to sit at his feet and hear the word was a better choice than Martha’s insistence of being distracted by chores (Luke 10:38-42). However, it would be naive to assume that is the only way God speaks to us. The complexity of God the Father, in his infinite being, has many other methods to get his message across to us. It may shock you to learn that God also communicates in the throng of noise and busyness of daily living. Yes, in the hustle and bustle of life, God screams over the noise to teach us his truths: “Wisdom calls aloud in the street, she raises her voice in the public squares; at the head of the noisy streets she cries out, in the gateways of the city she makes her speech” (Proverbs 1: 20-21). God the Father is omnipresent and all powerful and can devise all kinds of ways to teach us. This teaching certainly broadens my spiritual knowledge, knowing that I can still calm down at a scenic view at the end of a hike, look at the landscape, hear the silence and wait for God’s voice to instruct me; at the same time, I can also be in the midst of a noisy and crowded street and be conscious that God can communicate with me there too.
