Most recently a follower criticized one of my posts on Instagram indicating that profit is not the way of God. In that man’s mind, he was referring to profit strictly in terms of money and material gain. If you read our blog regularly, we point out in various posts that there is nothing wrong in material gain or gain in wealth. The Book of Proverbs is full of such teachings. The main thing to remember in God’s teachings, is the path one travels or the methods one uses to gain. If one gains at the expense of the weak or poor, that is not righteous. This teaching is made clear in the Bible (Psalm 10). God does not smile on gain at the expense of others. This phenonomon takes place because people who oppress others are putting their interests first. God teaches us to reverse that viewpoint. Put the interest of others first and then you will see that others will gain and yourself too; that is win-win (1 Cor. 10:24). God outlines the path to a happy and fulfilled life by teaching us the eternal and temporal value of service to others. Jesus modelled this teaching in the Washing of the Feet of the Apostles (John 13). Finally, we are given the a precious verse in Mark 10:45, “ For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” This is true meaning and happiness, putting the interest of others before ourselves. As we live in this way, our lives become full and happy and we achieve our highest purpose in life (Palm 16:11).
