Many people even in Christian churches today confuse the place of humanity in God’s plan. The truth is that men & women are at the focal point in the eyes of God. Everything centers around our eternal salvation and God’s intrinsic desire to have all people give their hearts and lives to Him. This is why God gave His only son to die for us, so that His love can resonate into our hearts and we turn to God for eternal life. (John 3:16) The true meaning of the Sabbath rest also reflects the importance of humanity within the plan of creation. The Sabbath is not more important than the person; it is the other way around: “One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain. The Pharisees said to him, Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath? He answered, Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need? In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions. Then he said to them, The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” (Mark 2:23-27) This teaching clarifies the place of the law in our lives and brings to focus our true goal: get to heaven. God gives us tools to help us get to heaven. In many cases people confuse the tools and consider them the point of pursuit or the end game. Nothing can be further from the Truth. We, as human beings, the state of our souls, is most important to God. The condition of our natural environment is another domain of debate that many have given misplaced priority. Yes the earth should be cared for. The trees, oceans and animals should not be desecrated or abused by rapacious intentions; however, this stewardship should be orientated by the view that we are more important to God than the earth itself. The earth was made for us, not us for the earth.
