We are God-Like

Written by Joe Dardano

We are created in God’s image and likeness. That means were are created to be like God, but not actually be God. We resemble God. We share in God’s abiltity to love unconditionally, to forgive sins, to bring justice to the poor and suffering, to live a holy life unstained by sin, and more. This resemblance to God’s character gives life to the passage in Psalm 82:6-7, ““I said, ‘You are “gods”; you are all sons of the Most High.’ But you will die like mere mortals; you will fall like every other ruler.” This passage caused scandal in John 10. Jesus’s opponents accused him of blasphemy. But they did not get it. They did not understand the passage in Psalm 82, where it is clear that we are are like God but will die like mere mortals. This brings clarity to the idea that were have divinity within us but fall short of being God because death awaits all humans. Because we all carry a divine presence, we need to respect one another. As we respect and love one another, we give validity to our belief that God resides inside us.
