Spiritual Anti-Depressants

Written by Joe Dardano

God teaches us that sin drags us down emotionally (Isaiah 6: 1-6). Contemporary customs invariably encourages us to see a doctor, or psychologist. Anti-depressant pills are commonly used to treat such conditions. It is not out of the ordinary to rely on these drugs to solve emotional crises. Taking this path, does it occur that one may be merely masking underlying issues by seeking a drug-related solution? Now if one pays for therapy in conjunction with taking pills and then ultimately is weaned off the anti-depressant pills, perhaps a reasonable solution is found. But what if dependence on pills persist indefinitely. It is not out of the question to find people in such a scenario. I have known people who have been on such drugs for years. I have also known people who incessantly seek “natural” solutions to their health issues, whether it involves eating a specific type of diet or engaging in a certain workout routine or combination of both. Today I point to James 5:16 to those who seek a natural solution to emotional problems: “Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. A prayer of a righteous person, when it is brought about, can accomplish much.” A healed spirit can help fix feelings of depression. The only prescription you require is a willingness to approach God for help.
